How the numbers work
Every number on this site is a price a firm posted on the web. This page shows where the prices come from and what we do with them.
The data comes from the Web Price Index
The prices here come from the Web Price Index. It collects published prices for web work from firms in Canada, the US, and other countries. This site uses the same prices. It shows them for a Canadian reader, in Canadian dollars.
Canadian prices count three times
A price from a Canadian firm counts three times when we work out Typical and the range. A price from anywhere else counts once. So the numbers lean toward what Canadian firms charge, but a service with few Canadian prices still gets a fair picture.
When a service has five or more Canadian prices, its page also shows a line for Canadian firms only. That line has no weighting at all.
Only prices a firm publishes
We use a price only if a firm shows it on its own website, such as a price page or a package list. A gig on Fiverr or Upwork counts too, because the seller set that price in public.
Every price links to the page where we saw it, with the date we saw it. You can click and check any number on this site.
Each price shows as the source publishes it. We do not add or take off sales tax.
How Typical is worked out
We take every active price for a service seen in the last 12 months. We change each one into Canadian dollars at the rate on the day the site was built.
Each price gives one number. A single price stays as it is. A range uses its middle. A "from" price uses the starting price.
With five or more prices, Typical is the weighted middle price. "Most prices fall between" is the weighted middle half. With two to four prices, we show the lowest and highest and mark them "Few sources so far." With one price, we show that one source.
Gig sites like Fiverr and Upwork stay out of Typical. Gig prices run far below firm prices, so they get a line of their own.
A service page with fewer than 3 prices stays out of search results until it has more.
The agency list
The agency list is built from the same data. A firm shows up when it has at least one current Canadian price. A firm whose prices are all gone drops off at the next update. Gig sites and software companies are not on the list. A spot on the list is not a review.
How often it changes
New prices come in every week. Each Sunday the Web Price Index adds new prices and checks the oldest ones again. This site picks up those changes the same day. The updates page lists each one.
Exchange rates
Rates come from Frankfurter. It is a free service that posts daily rates from the European Central Bank and other central banks. The rates in this version of the site are from Oct 28, 2026. Pick US dollars at the top of any page and every price switches, using that day's rate.
Converted prices are rounded. Under 100 to the nearest dollar. Under 1,000 to the nearest 5. Above that to the nearest 10. Prices under 10 keep their cents.
What we leave out, and why
Quotes sent by email or phone, because no one else can check them. Cost guides and survey averages, because no firm charges them. Software fees like a Shopify plan, because they are not a service.
We also leave out the prices of the company behind this site, Acorn Websites. A price guide should not rate its own owner.
An hourly rate stays an hourly rate. We never turn it into a project price.
Fixes
